Opened in February 2026, the Austrian Cultural Forum Accra is Austria’s cultural forum in West Africa and works across Ghana, Togo and Benin. Despite being a new institution, it builds on existing Austrian cultural networks in the region and is developing partnerships with artists, cultural organisations and institutions. Its programme is particularly suited to collaborative and context-responsive practices rather than projects conceived independently of the communities in which they are presented.

Relevant themes include sustainable urban development, climate change, environmental degradation, digitalisation and AI, socioeconomic inequality, Pan-African histories, changing traditions and gender roles. Artists are encouraged to work with local or diasporic practitioners and to reflect critically on questions of extraction and representation. Technical exhibition infrastructure can be limited, with many dynamic spaces located outdoors or in unconventional buildings, making adaptability and sensitivity to climatic conditions important.

Address: SU Tower, 5th Floor, 18 Castle Road, North Ridge, Accra, Ghana

The Austrian Cultural Forum Beijing promotes artistic, cultural and scientific exchange between Austria and China, connecting artists, researchers and institutions through collaborative and interdisciplinary projects. Its programme places particular emphasis on dialogue between Austrian and Chinese practitioners and on formats that create sustained relationships rather than one-directional cultural presentation.

Relevant areas include contemporary visual culture, science and research cooperation, digitalisation, ecology, innovation and intercultural dialogue. Projects that connect artistic practice with technology, environmental questions or wider social transformation are particularly well suited to this context. The Forum also supports Austrian artists and researchers working in China and encourages collaborations that bring together local knowledge, international perspectives and experimental approaches across disciplines.

The Austrian Cultural Forum Belgrade has a strong tradition of cooperation in the visual arts, working closely with Serbian cultural institutions and art universities and building on a number of larger collaborative projects. As the Forum does not have its own exhibition space, local partnerships are central to the development and presentation of projects. One of its key partners is the Museum of Contemporary Art Belgrade (MSUB), with which the Forum has previously realised exhibitions including

End of Language: Wittgenstein Re-imagined

The current political situation influences a lot of work that is being done in Serbia – many deal with questions on art in times of crisis. In cooperation with MSUB, a one-month residency format is also envisaged, with accommodation provided by the museum and the possibility of connecting the residency to an exhibition in one of its galleries, an artist talk or another public programme. This creates space for artists to spend time in Belgrade, develop work in dialogue with the local scene and build longer-term relationships with Serbian partners.

Address: Kneza Sime Markovića 2, 11000 Belgrade, Serbia

Venue model: No dedicated exhibition space; projects are realised with local partner institutions, including the Museum of Contemporary Art Belgrade.

Belgrade

Located in Hans Hollein’s Austrian Embassy building in Berlin-Mitte, the Austrian Cultural Forum Berlin is one of Austria’s central cultural representations in Germany. Its programme brings together visual and performing art, architecture, design, film, literature, music and science, with a strong emphasis on dialogue between contemporary Austrian and German practitioners. The Forum has its own large L-shaped gallery as well as a 140-seat event space, enabling exhibitions, multimedia works, performances and accompanying discursive programmes.

Current priorities include architecture and urban development, democracy and resilient societies, women’s rights and equality, sustainability, ecology and intersections between art, science and emerging technologies. For 2027, questions of origin, belonging and identity form an additional thematic framework. Projects that combine compelling artistic positions with dialogue, exchange and potential cooperation with Berlin-based institutions are particularly welcome.

Address: Stauffenbergstraße 1, 10785 Berlin, Germany

The Austrian Cultural Forum Bratislava combines exhibitions in its own gallery with an extensive network of partnerships across Slovakia. Its visual-art programme has included collaborations with museums, galleries, universities and festivals such as the Month of Photography and Bratislava Design Week, alongside institutions including Danubiana, tranzit and academic partners in architecture, art and curatorial studies. This combination provides opportunities for projects ranging from gallery exhibitions to broader institutional collaborations.

The Forum identifies democracy, cultural policy, social diversity, regional heritage and societal polarisation as particularly relevant contemporary issues in Slovakia. The country’s independent cultural scene is active and closely interconnected, while current pressures on cultural organisations have intensified debates around artistic freedom, tolerance, minorities and the social role of culture. Projects rooted in dialogue with this independent scene and attentive to the changing cultural environment can therefore resonate particularly strongly.

Address: Astoria Palace, Hodžovo námestie 1/A, 811 06 Bratislava, Slovakia

The Austrian Cultural Forum Brussels operates from the new Österreichhaus, opened in June 2026 in the city’s European Quarter. For the first time, the Forum has access to its own presentation and event space alongside Austria’s embassy and EU representation. Because conventional wall-hanging surfaces are limited, the venue is particularly suited to media art, video, spatial installations and performative formats, supported by a powerful LED wall and additional screens.

Brussels offers an unusually international setting shaped by the European Union, NATO, diplomacy, journalism, advocacy, academia and a highly mobile population. This creates opportunities for projects addressing European questions, transnational identities, democratic participation and the relationship between culture and politics. Rather than functioning only as a Belgian cultural context, Brussels can therefore serve as a meeting point for artistic positions addressing Europe and international exchange through contemporary visual and interdisciplinary practice.

Address: Avenue de Cortenbergh 4–10, 1040 Brussels, Belgium

Venue model: Own event space in Österreichhaus, particularly suited to media, video and installation work.

Without its own exhibition venue, the Austrian Cultural Forum Bucharest works through an extensive network of museums, galleries, cultural centres and independent organisations in Bucharest and across Romania. Its long-term partners include institutions in cities such as Sibiu, Timișoara, Brașov, Iași and Sfântu Gheorghe, allowing projects to develop beyond the capital. Larger exhibitions frequently connect Austrian artistic positions with current Romanian debates and encourage sustained collaboration between practitioners from both countries.

Themes of particular relevance include democracy, gender, Jewish life and Holocaust memory, Roma communities, the Danube and the complex shared histories of Austria and Romania. Artists are encouraged to research contemporary Romanian debates, develop projects in conversation with local practitioners and consider regional contexts outside Bucharest, where audiences and institutional partnerships can sometimes be more accessible than in the culturally saturated capital.

Bucharest

The Austrian Cultural Forum Budapest offers its own gallery in a city with close geographical and historical ties to Austria. Proximity to Vienna makes transport and travel comparatively straightforward, while the Forum has developed its exhibition programme around open dialogue and its role as a cultural safe space. Its own venue allows projects to be presented directly while maintaining connections to Budapest’s broader contemporary art scene.

Questions of democracy, European values, freedom of expression, critical thinking and wider sociopolitical developments are central to the Forum’s current interests. Budapest’s artistic community is described by the Forum as dynamic, diverse, critically engaged and artistically ambitious, making exchange with local practitioners an important part of the experience. Projects that combine a strong contemporary visual language with dialogue around civic and cultural questions can therefore find a particularly relevant context here.

The Austrian Cultural Forum Cairo combines its own exhibition facilities with close connections to Egypt’s independent art scene, galleries, cultural initiatives and practitioners. Its programme places particular emphasis on collaborative projects connecting Austrian and Egyptian artists and on work developed in response to the local context. Rather than operating solely as a conventional exhibition venue, the Forum positions itself as a platform for co-creation, artistic exchange and longer-term relationships.

Current interests include urban space and rapidly changing cities, cultural heritage, climate and urban ecologies, digital environments, feminist perspectives and intercultural knowledge exchange. Locally developed and site-responsive projects are particularly encouraged. Artists should consider legal, social and logistical conditions early in the process, especially because interventions in public space can face substantial restrictions. Partnerships with Egyptian artists, curators and cultural organisations are therefore central to both relevance and practical implementation.

Address: 1103 Corniche El-Nile, 1st floor, Apt. 7, Garden City, Cairo 11111, Egypt

The Austrian Cultural Forum Istanbul works as a mediator between Austrian and Turkish artists, researchers and cultural institutions, with a strong emphasis on sustained collaboration rather than one-off presentation. Based in the historic Palais Yeniköy on the Bosporus, the Forum has its own well-equipped exhibition and event spaces and can support projects from preparation and production through installation and dismantling. Exhibitions are often strengthened by talks, workshops, seminars, performances and other public formats.

Relevant themes include identity and pluralism, gender equality and feminist perspectives, climate and ecological transformation, urbanisation and gentrification, freedom of expression, memory, public space, new media and AI. Projects benefit from local partnerships, interdisciplinarity and active engagement with communities. Artists are encouraged to approach Turkey beyond Istanbul alone and to develop work with cultural and social sensitivity to its varied regional contexts.

Istanbul

The Austrian Cultural Forum Ljubljana works through partnerships rather than its own exhibition space, making careful advance planning particularly important. The Forum maintains a strong local network, but suitable exhibition venues often require long lead times. Potential partners span Ljubljana’s municipal museums and galleries, the alternative cultural environment around Metelkova, Center Rog and specialist organisations such as Aksioma for contemporary digital art and new-media practice.

Current areas of interest include LGBTQIA+ questions, media transparency and socially responsible approaches to artificial intelligence. Ljubljana itself has a lively and diverse cultural scene that offers strong possibilities for exchange with both institutional and independent practitioners. Because the Forum operates with a comparatively small team, artists should expect a high degree of independence in developing and managing their projects. Proposals that establish partnerships early and engage directly with Ljubljana’s existing cultural ecosystem are therefore especially appropriate.

Address: Prešernova cesta 23, 1000 Ljubljana, Slovenia

Venue model: No own venue; projects depend on local partnerships and substantial advance planning.

Ljubljana

The Austrian Cultural Forum London develops exhibitions with British partners and curators while also operating its own flexible white-cube gallery. The building offers several interconnected settings, including the gallery, an event salon and its distinctive open staircase, allowing installations, sculpture, video and wall-based work to expand beyond a single exhibition room. The historic multi-storey architecture encourages projects that respond creatively to different spatial conditions.

For 2027, the Forum is particularly interested in “divisions and dialogue”: social and regional inequalities, migration, colonial legacies, political polarisation and the growing divide between online and offline forms of social life. Collaboration with local communities and neighbourhoods is highly valued. In London’s extremely dense cultural landscape, projects need a clear local relevance and accessible framing capable of reaching audiences beyond specialist art circles while connecting local experience to broader international questions.

London

The Austrian Cultural Forum Madrid operates without its own exhibition venue, instead drawing on a long-established network of museums, cultural centres, galleries and other public and private institutions throughout Spain. This partnership-based model gives the Forum flexibility to identify locations and collaborators suited to individual artistic projects, including more technically or conceptually demanding formats.

Its programme engages with women in art and culture, human and women’s rights, democracy, climate and environmental questions, intercultural dialogue, memory, artificial intelligence, sustainability and climate justice. Projects that connect contemporary artistic practice with current social debates and develop meaningful relationships with local institutions and audiences are particularly relevant to the Forum’s work. Its extensive network across Spain also allows projects to move beyond Madrid and respond to different regional cultural contexts, while public discussions, artist exchanges and other accompanying formats can deepen engagement with the work.

The Austrian Cultural Forum Mexico operates without its own exhibition rooms within one of the world’s most active and competitive contemporary art environments. Projects are consequently realised primarily through invitations, residencies, galleries, art fairs and partnerships with Mexican institutions. Mexico City’s dense network of museums, private collections, independent initiatives and international fairs creates extensive opportunities.

Relevant themes include climate culture, sustainability, gender, violence against women and intersections between art and science. Existing relationships with local partners are often crucial to making projects viable, and early coordination around responsibilities, budgets and venue availability is strongly recommended. Artists should also approach the context with flexibility: schedules and logistical arrangements can change, while that same informality can create space for unexpected collaborations and spontaneous developments.

The Austrian Cultural Forum New Delhi places particular emphasis on long-term, context-responsive artistic exchange rather than conventional gallery presentation. A key example is its involvement with sā Ladakh, the regenerative art biennale in the Himalayas, where land art, environmental practice and collaboration with local communities connect Austrian artists with Indian and international practitioners. The Forum has helped develop these relationships through sustained partnerships and interdisciplinary cultural networks.

Its programme engages with climate and ecological sustainability, migration and identity, gender equality, diversity and cultural participation. Artists are encouraged to research regional histories, traditions and social structures and to build relationships with local practitioners before developing work. Spending sufficient time in India is particularly valuable.

Founded in 1956, the Austrian Cultural Forum New York is one of Austria’s most prominent international platforms for contemporary art, culture and academic exchange. Located in its landmark building designed by Austrian-American architect Raimund Abraham in Midtown Manhattan, the Forum presents exhibitions, concerts, film screenings, performances, literary events, lectures and interdisciplinary programmes.

Its programme places contemporary Austrian perspectives in dialogue with New York’s diverse cultural scene and with broader international debates. The Forum collaborates with museums, universities, festivals, galleries and independent organisations throughout the United States, supporting both established and emerging artists, researchers and cultural practitioners. By encouraging experimentation and bringing together participants from different disciplines and backgrounds, it creates opportunities for new artistic encounters, long-term professional networks and sustained cultural exchange between Austria and the United States.

The Austrian Cultural Forum Ottawa does not operate its own exhibition venue, so projects are developed collaboratively with artist-run centres, museums, galleries and cultural organisations across Canada. Given the country’s vast geography, the Forum also coordinates artist travel with Austrian cultural representations in New York and Washington where possible, creating ecological and financial synergies and encouraging projects to think beyond a single-city framework.

Important Canadian debates include Indigenous rights, reconciliation and the continuing legacies of colonialism, relationships to land and natural resources, climate change, national identity, community building, housing and affordability. Projects engaging with these subjects require meaningful contextual knowledge and careful collaboration rather than external observation alone. The Forum therefore particularly values genuine partnerships with Canadian artists and communities, developed on an equal footing and capable of producing sustained exchange rather than a one-directional presentation of Austrian work.

The Austrian Cultural Forum Paris functions primarily as a strategic partner and connector rather than an exhibition venue of its own. It works with French museums, galleries, art spaces, universities and residency programmes to position Austrian artists within established local contexts and can accompany exhibitions with talks, discussions and mediation formats. Its networks include major institutions as well as independent and experimental spaces across Paris and its surrounding metropolitan area.

Its programme engages with gender equality, feminism, minority rights, memory, identity, migration, social polarisation, access to culture, climate change, digital transformation and artificial intelligence. Artists are encouraged to understand the specific institutional and social context in which they work, with French-language competence offering a significant advantage. Paris is exceptionally institutionally dense, making carefully chosen partnerships, strong local research and early attention to production, contracts, transport and administration essential for meaningful and sustainable projects.

The Austrian Cultural Forum Prague benefits from a centrally located gallery with strong visibility and easy public access. Its programme combines established institutional activity with an openness to experimental and less conventional formats, supported by close connections to Prague’s younger contemporary art scene. The gallery therefore offers a clear exhibition framework while allowing projects to depart from traditional presentation models.

The Forum sees many of the same social and cultural questions that shape contemporary Austrian debate as relevant in the Czech context, including feminism and gender equality, ecological questions, sustainable development, digital humanism and artificial intelligence. For the upcoming programme, particular attention will be given to women and feminist perspectives alongside technology and ecology. At the same time, the Forum stresses that conceptual relevance should not replace artistic quality: visually and aesthetically compelling exhibition-making remains an important consideration for its audience and curatorial approach.

The Austrian Cultural Forum Pretoria builds its art programmes around partnerships and sustained working relationships rather than isolated presentations. It hosts events with galleries, art centres, universities, foundations and independent organisations in South Africa and across the wider region. Projects such as ‘Concrete Culture’ demonstrate its preference for transdisciplinary formats in which Austrian and Southern African practitioners exchange ideas and develop work in collaboration.

Urban youth culture, ecological justice, women’s rights, migration, unemployment and the legacies of colonialism and apartheid are among the key contexts identified by the Forum. Artists should plan production, shipping and venue coordination well in advance and approach historical and political subjects with contextual sensitivity. The Forum particularly encourages projects that establish genuine relationships with South African practitioners and institutions.

Founded in 1935, with roots in the Austrian Institute for Historical Studies established in Rome in 1881, the Austrian Cultural Forum Rome promotes cultural and scientific exchange between Austria and Italy. It presents contemporary Austrian art and ideas through exhibitions, concerts, film screenings, literature, performance, lectures and interdisciplinary projects.

Working with cultural institutions and partners throughout Italy, the Forum supports long-term collaboration between Austrian and Italian artists, researchers and audiences. Its programme frequently addresses ecology, climate, society, transformation, hope and possible futures. Located near Villa Borghese, the Forum’s historic building also houses the Austrian Historical Institute and an extensive library, while its exhibition spaces, foyer and garden provide settings for encounters and public events.

The Austrian Cultural Forum Sarajevo relies on close cooperation with Bosnian-Herzegovinian cultural institutions because it does not operate its own exhibition space. Recent successful projects have connected contemporary art with locally specific questions, including biodiversity, environmental protection, air pollution, and interdisciplinary exchange between artistic and scientific practice. This model favours projects that respond directly to Bosnia and Herzegovina rather than importing a subject without local grounding.

Important contexts include post-war reconciliation and memory, women’s rights and gender equality, interreligious and intercultural dialogue, the precarious position of cultural institutions, and environmental problems such as severe winter air pollution. Sarajevo’s relatively compact cultural scene includes an active and well-connected younger generation of artists, creating strong possibilities for collaboration. Shared Austrian-Bosnian-Herzegovinian histories also provide numerous points of connection. Flexibility remains valuable, as local project organisation can involve spontaneous or short-notice changes.

The Austrian Cultural Forum Sofia supports contemporary projects that create dialogue between Austrian and Bulgarian artists and connect international exchange with locally relevant cultural questions. Its visual-art programme draws on cooperation with established institutions as well as Bulgaria’s independent art scene, with interdisciplinary approaches playing an important role. Recent programming balances contemporary practice with new interpretations of cultural heritage, national memory and artistic traditions.

Relevant themes include cultural identity, historical memory, social transformation, sustainability, digitalisation and emerging technologies, alongside broader questions about people, society and the environment. Projects are particularly promising when they establish a meaningful relationship to Bulgarian contexts rather than treating Sofia simply as a presentation site. Cooperation with local museums, galleries, independent spaces and artists can significantly strengthen both visibility and relevance, while experimental or innovative formats offer opportunities to connect contemporary Austrian practice with Bulgaria’s evolving cultural landscape.

The Austrian Cultural Forum Tel Aviv promotes artistic and cultural exchange between Austria, Israel and the Palestinian Territory through a strong network of museums, galleries, cultural institutions and practitioners from the contemporary art scene in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Haifa and other parts of the region. As the Forum does not operate its own exhibition space, visual-art projects are developed in close cooperation with local partners and can also take place in unconventional or site-specific settings. This collaborative model allows projects to connect directly with different artistic communities and audiences.

Its programme engages with contemporary social and cultural questions, with particular attention to democracy, human rights and coexistence. Projects that respond thoughtfully to the local context, encourage dialogue between different perspectives and strengthen connections between cultural scenes are especially well suited to the Forum’s work.

The Austrian Cultural Forum Tokyo works within Japan’s dense and internationally connected art and cultural landscape, with a strong focus on linking Austrian artists with Japanese institutions and local cultural scenes. Long-term cooperation is particularly important in the Japanese context, and projects are developed with established museums and cultural institutions as well as independent project spaces, galleries, universities and regional partners. Projects are especially relevant when they engage with Japan beyond familiar Western representations and involve exchange or collaboration with local practitioners from the conceptual stage.

Its programme responds to major social and cultural transformations in Japan, including demographic ageing and population decline, urbanisation and the depopulation of rural regions, changing gender roles, social diversity, work, participation and questions of individual identity. Ecological sustainability, climate change and the relationship between people, nature and technology are also important areas of interest, alongside tradition and transformation, craft and material cultural heritage, digitalisation and artificial intelligence. Early planning, reliable local partnerships and sustained personal exchange are particularly important, and projects can also benefit from looking beyond Tokyo to institutions and initiatives in other Japanese cities and regions.

The Austrian Cultural Forum Warsaw is a long-established part of the city’s cultural landscape, with its own centrally located exhibition spaces and strong relationships across both institutional and independent art scenes. Its programme frequently places Austrian and Polish perspectives in dialogue and supports projects that connect contemporary artistic practice with local cultural and social contexts. Collaboration with Polish artists and institutions is an important part of its curatorial approach.

Its programme engages with Central European histories and contemporary identities, migration, tolerance, LGBTQIA+ rights, gender equality, Jewish cultural heritage and current social and political developments. The Forum also places strong emphasis on accessibility and inclusive participation. Projects that foster dialogue, involve local perspectives and respond thoughtfully to the cultural context of Warsaw and Poland are particularly well suited to its work. A floor plan of the exhibition space is available for download on the Austrian Cultural Forum Warsaw website. The Forum’s exhibition space is marked as Room 1.

Its programme is developed both at the Forum itself and together with Croatian museums, galleries, universities, festivals and other cultural institutions, creating connections between Austrian and Croatian practitioners across disciplines.

Its activities span visual art, music, literature, film, theatre, performance, education and interdisciplinary formats. Contemporary projects frequently engage with questions of identity, gender and equality, European histories, democracy, memory, social change and artistic freedom. Projects that create meaningful exchange between Austrian and Croatian perspectives, involve local partners and respond to the wider Central and Southeast European context are particularly well suited to the Forum’s collaborative approach.
